About this spot

This station on the Aizu Railway Aizu Line is known for having one of the few thatched-roof station buildings in the country, and it is the gateway to Ouchi-juku. The waiting room, filled with the warmth of wood, has a sunken irori hearth, which is lit depending on the season, and the smoky scent stirs a sense of travel. The station building itself is picturesque, and the sight of the thatched roof alongside a local train is a shot you can only get here. There is also a casual foot bath in front of the station, letting you relax while waiting for the train. Though it's a small station surrounded by mountains, it serves as a hub in the Aizu countryside where travelers heading to Ouchi-juku and Tonohetsuri come and go, making it a great spot for a commemorative photo at the start of your trip. In spring, the row of cherry trees around the station adds color to the thatched roof.

Tips

From the Asakusa area, there are trains that run directly through to the Aizu Railway via the Tobu Railway and Yagan Railway, making it an excellent match for a railway journey. Ouchi-juku is about 15 minutes away by car, but bus and taxi services are limited, so it's reassuring to decide your transportation in advance. If traveling by car, it's also worth stopping by the station just to photograph the station building.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. If you time it with a train arriving or departing, you can capture the thatched-roof station together with the train. A clear morning is recommended
