Start Your Aizu Journey from a Rare Thatched-Roof Station
About this spot
A station on the Aizu Railway Aizu Line, it's known as the gateway to Ouchi-juku and has one of the nation's few thatched-roof station buildings. The waiting room, filled with the warmth of wood, features an irori hearth; depending on the season, it's lit and the aroma of smoldering smoke evokes the spirit of travel. The station building itself is picturesque—the sight of the thatched roof and the local train together can only be captured here. A small foot bath is available at the station entrance for a relaxing wait between trains. Though it's a small station surrounded by mountains, it's a hub along the Aizu routes where travelers heading to Ouchi-juku and Tōnohetsuri pass through—perfect for commemorative photos marking the start of your journey. In spring, the rows of cherry blossoms surrounding the station add color to the thatched roof.
Tips
From the Asakusa area, direct trains to the Aizu Railway are available via the Tōbu and Nōi railways, making it perfect for rail travel. Ouchi-juku is about 15 minutes by car, but buses and taxis are limited, so arrange your transportation in advance for peace of mind. If driving, a quick stop to photograph the station is also recommended.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 minutes. If you visit when trains are arriving and departing, you can capture the station building and train together. The clear morning air is recommended.
