Gaze at the Odd Stone Cliffs from the Suspension Bridge—Shaped by One Million Years of Erosion
About this spot
A spectacular cliff of odd-shaped rocks carved and weathered by the flow of the Okawa (Aga) River over an estimated one million years. It's designated as a nationally designated Natural Monument. "Hetsuri" is an Aizu dialect term for a steep cliff close to the river. The white stone walls form a fan-like sequence, each uniquely named—such as the Stage Rock—and the suspension bridge Fujimi Bridge spanning the gorge brings you close to the rock face itself. The panoramic view of the gorge and odd rocks from the bridge is spectacular, and during the seasons of fresh green leaves and autumn foliage, the colors are even more striking. The Kokuzo Bosatsu is enshrined in the cave on the opposite bank, offering a sense of adventure. Crossing the suspension bridge as a couple adds a thrilling touch to your journey, making this one of Aizu Shimogo's most representative scenic spots.
Tips
From Yunoukami Onsen Station, take the Aizu Railway one stop to Tōnohetsuri Station, then walk about 5 minutes. By car, it's about 10 minutes from Yunoukami Onsen Station, with parking available near the entrance. The suspension bridge is narrow and sways, so pass each other slowly. The rocks beyond the bridge are slippery, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. During flooding or winter, the bridge may be closed—follow local guidance.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Avoid the busy mid-morning when tour buses arrive; the early morning is quieter and better for peaceful photos of the gorge.
