About this spot

These cliffs of oddly shaped rock, designated a National Natural Monument, were formed by the erosion and weathering of the Okawa River (Agano River) over what is said to be a million years. Hetsuri is a word in the Aizu dialect for a steep cliff pressing against a river. The white rock walls, lined up like a folding screen, have been given distinctive names such as Butai-iwa (Stage Rock), and crossing the Fujimi Bridge, a suspension bridge over the gorge, lets you get right up close to the rock surface. The panorama of the gorge and the oddly shaped rocks seen from the bridge is truly powerful, and the colors are even more striking during the fresh green or autumn foliage seasons. On the far bank, a rock cave enshrines Kokuzo-son, adding a bit of a sense of exploration. The thrill of crossing the suspension bridge together adds spice to the trip, making this a representative scenic spot of Shimogo in Aizu.

Tips

From Yunokami Onsen Station, take the Aizu Railway one stop to Tonohetsuri Station, then walk about 5 minutes. By car, it's about 10 minutes from Yunokami Onsen Station, and there is parking near the entrance. The suspension bridge is narrow and sways, so pass others slowly. The rocky area past the bridge can be slippery, so shoes that are easy to walk in are essential. The bridge may be closed to crossing during high water or in winter, so follow the on-site guidance.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Mornings, before it gets busy with sightseeing buses around midday, are quiet and good for taking calm photos of the gorge
