A prefectural museum nestled at the southern foot of Shinobu Mountain, surrounded by lush greenery. It houses an extensive collection spanning artists with connections to Fukushima, international works by Ben Shahn and Andrew Wyeth, and contemporary and modern Japanese paintings, Western paintings, and crafts. The permanent collection features rotating exhibitions. The gallery rooms have high ceilings and are spaciously designed with seating for rest, allowing visitors of all generations, including the elderly, to appreciate art at their own pace. The expansive lawn in front of the museum is perfect for children to stretch and refresh themselves. Adjacent to the prefectural library, the entire area is infused with cultural atmosphere. Located near Fukushima Station, it's an ideal stop for afternoon art appreciation combined with a rest.
Tips
About a 2-minute walk from Bijutsukan Toshokan-mae Station on the Fukushima Kotsu Iizaka Line; free parking is also available. The general admission fee for the permanent collection is a reasonable 280 yen, with free admission for high school students and younger. Special exhibitions have separate fees and can be crowded depending on the period, so allow extra time. There is a café inside where weary grandparents can also rest. Closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday).
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes total. After lunch, during the calm afternoon hours, is ideal for leisurely appreciation.
