A prefectural art museum standing at the southern foot of Mount Shinobu, wrapped in lush greenery. It holds a broad collection ranging from artists connected to Fukushima to overseas works by Ben Shahn and Andrew Wyeth, as well as modern and contemporary Japanese-style and Western-style painting and crafts, with the permanent exhibit rotating pieces to introduce parts of the collection. The gallery, with its high ceilings and spacious feel, is furnished with chairs for resting, a welcome feature that lets the grandparents' generation appreciate the art at their own pace. The spacious front lawn is just right for giving the kids a change of pace, and combined with the adjoining prefectural library, you can spend a moment wrapped in a cultural atmosphere. Close to Fukushima Station too, it's a perfect stop for art appreciation that doubles as an afternoon break.

Tips

About a 2-minute walk from Bijutsukan-Toshokan-mae Station (美術館図書館前駅) on the Fukushima Kotsu Iizaka Line, with free parking also available. Admission to the permanent exhibit is an affordable 280 yen for general visitors, and free for high school students and younger. Special exhibitions are priced separately and can get crowded depending on the run, so allow plenty of time. There's also a cafe inside, useful for a rest for grandparents tired from walking. Closed Mondays (the following day if Monday is a public holiday).
