Kabu-yu, the Original Bath of Misasa Hot Spring—Rest Your Feet in the Free Foot Bath
About this spot
The original bathhouse said to mark the origins of Misasa Hot Spring. Legend tells of a feudal retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitomo named Okubo Samanotsuke who saved a white wolf. The divine Myoken Bodhisattva appeared in his dreams and revealed a spring of hot water bubbling from the roots of an old camphor tree—hence the name "Kabu-yu" (Tree Stump Bath). Misasa waters are renowned worldwide for their exceptional radon content, and Kabu-yu remains an active public bathhouse frequented by locals. A free foot bath and drinking spring station are available in front of the bathhouse, allowing visitors to easily experience the benefits of these famous waters. Soaking your feet together, side by side, after your mountain exertion offers a special reward unique to this course.
Tips
The foot bath and drinking station are free. Bring a towel to dry your feet. When sampling the mineral water, taste small amounts at a time. The public bathhouse is part of the locals' daily life, so please use it quietly and respectfully. It is a short walk from the center of the hot spring town down a side street.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Visiting in mid-afternoon when you're tired makes the foot bath especially restorative.
