Primordial Mountain Village Landscape Beyond the Mountain Tunnel

A quiet mountain village settlement tucked away in a valley beyond a tunnel at the mountain pass, reached from Chizu Post Town. Along lanes so narrow that vehicles cannot pass, wooden farmhouses and storehouses cluster together. This landscape, often called "the primordial scenery of Japanese mountain villages," has been designated as a Prefecture Traditional Buildings Preservation District. Walking is the primary way to explore the settlement. Following the small paths while listening to the murmur of irrigation channels, you'll feel as though you've stepped into a folktale world. Stop for refreshment at a café housed in a renovated old farmhouse, or extend your walk to the shrine that watches over the settlement. This is the star attraction of the latter half of the course, where time flows gently and quietly.

Tips

Vehicles cannot enter the settlement, so park at the parking area nearby and explore on foot. The paths are narrow with some unpaved sections, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. There are few toilets or shops, so bring water for peace of mind. Remember this is a living community, so walk quietly.
