Flow of the course

About this spot

This ancient Tendai-sect temple has long flourished as a sacred site of mountain worship. It once had a great many monks' quarters and reached remarkable prosperity, said to have rivaled Mount Koya and Mount Hiei in influence. After climbing the stone steps to quietly put your hands together at the main hall, take a leisurely stroll around the grounds. The statue of an ox known as the treasure ox is a popular spot, said to grant a single wish if stroked with a sincere heart. Since it stands right next to the approach to Ogamiyama Shrine's Okunomiya, it's a treat to be able to enjoy both visits together. The temple complex, wrapped in deep greenery, carries the solemn atmosphere unique to a mountain temple.

Tips

A voluntary donation is needed for the visit. Since it is adjacent to the stone-paved approach of Ogamiyama Shrine's Okunomiya, stopping by on the way back from visiting the Okunomiya makes for a smooth route. The stone steps continue, so keep wearing shoes that are easy to walk in. If you'd like a goshuin (temple stamp), check the reception location in advance.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. In the late morning, there are fewer tour groups, letting you take your time putting your hands together at the main hall
