Tour the Historic Residence of an Iron Master and an Izumo-Style Garden
About this spot
A memorial museum preserving the history of tatara iron production and mountain forest management as passed down through the Itohara family, who served as chief iron masters for the Matsue Domain. Numerous artifacts are displayed, including tools used in iron production, ancient documents, furnishings, and fine art crafts, vividly illustrating how this mountain village was once a center supporting Japan's iron production. The adjacent Itohara Family Residence is an impressive manor, and its garden represents the finest of Izumo-style garden design. The landscape of moss-covered stepping stones and trimmed trees changes its appearance with the seasons. The "Senshi no Michi" walking path through the estate forest is also well-maintained, providing a peaceful respite after the gorge hike.
Tips
Free parking is available. The memorial museum and garden can be viewed with a combined admission ticket. The museum has thorough exhibition explanations, so plan ample time. The garden's moss is particularly vivid and beautiful after rain.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Morning visits have fewer viewers, allowing you to quietly and leisurely appreciate the garden.
