One of Japan's Largest Double-Loop Roads, Like the Yamata no Orochi Coiling Upon Itself

A double-loop road designed to rapidly ascend a steep valley with approximately 100 meters of elevation change, stretching from Sakane to Miinohara on National Route 314. The road features eleven large and small bridges and three tunnels in succession. It takes its name from the Yamata no Orochi (the eight-headed serpent from Japanese mythology), as the road's configuration is inspired by the serpent coiling around itself. Driving through the loop, the landscape rotates with each turn of the steering wheel, creating a surreal sensation of spiraling upward toward the sky. From observation spots overlooking the entire loop, you can behold the striking red Mitsuno Ohashi Bridge and the architectural beauty of the entire loop structure—a stunning view that will tempt even non-engineering enthusiasts to take photographs.
Tips
Driving through the loop is free. For viewing the full landscape, the observation spaces around the roadside station or the base of Mitsuno Ohashi Bridge are recommended. As hairpin curves are continuous, drive at a controlled speed. Always park in designated spaces before taking photographs.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. In the afternoon, light filters into the valley, making the red Mitsuno Ohashi Bridge stand out even more against the green mountains.
