The ruins of a mountain castle that served as the headquarters of the Sengoku-period daimyo Amago clan, renowned as an impregnable fortress and selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. Climbing the winding 'Seven Curves' from the impressive stone walls of the Sanzangodan ruins leads to the main citadel where you can enjoy expansive views of the town of Hirose and distant mountains. The site is also known as the hometown of the samurai Shikanosuke Yamanaka, who devoted his life to restoring the clan. Walking along well-maintained paths, you can experience a delightful historical tour while contemplating the conflicts of the Sengoku period. The layered stone walls and earthworks characteristic of a mountain castle become increasingly impressive as you explore.
Tips
Parking at the roadside station at the base is the standard approach. After rain, mountain trails can be slippery, so choose footwear carefully. Depending on time and fitness, you can return from the Sanzangodan ruins for sufficient views, and on days with heavy rain, consider visiting the museum at the base instead.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The soft afternoon light beautifully illuminates the stone walls, and the view from the main citadel is particularly enjoyable.
