Pay respects at the "Eye Doctor Buddha" and enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Shinji from the temple grounds
About this spot
An ancient temple standing at approximately 200 meters above sea level on Ichinomiya Mountain, revered nationwide as the "Eye Doctor Buddha." The temple is also the namesake of Ichinomiya Railway. Visitors once climbed more than a thousand stone steps from the foot of the mountain to pay respects. Today, you can reach near the summit by bus or car, making it safe for families. After offering prayers for eye health at the main hall, don't miss the eighty-four thousand Buddha statues arranged in rows throughout the temple grounds and the grand panorama of Lake Shinji spreading beyond the trees. Partaking of the famous "Eye-Health Tea" will refresh your mind and spirit.
Tips
From Ichinomiya-Guchi Station, it's about a 10-minute journey by local bus or taxi. Buses run infrequently, so it's wise to check the outbound and return bus times in advance. The temple grounds have slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes for your visit.
Best time to visit
Journey time: approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Early afternoon sees fewer visitors, and light falls nicely on Lake Shinji as viewed from the temple grounds
