About this spot

This is an ancient temple built atop Mount Ichibata, about 200 meters above sea level, drawing faith from across the country as Ichibata Yakushi, the temple for healing eyes. Its name is also the origin of the Ichibata Electric Railway's (一畑電車) company name, and worshippers once climbed over a thousand stone steps from the foot of the mountain to visit. Today you can ride a bus or car nearly to the top, so it is easy even with family in tow. After praying for eye health at the main hall, do not miss the rows upon rows of eighty-four thousand Buddha statues on the grounds and the sweeping panorama of Lake Shinji (宍道湖) spreading beyond the trees. Trying the temple's famous eye-blessing tea, called Me no Ochato, will leave you feeling refreshed right down to your spirit.

Tips

It is about a 10-minute ride from Ichibataguchi Station (一畑口駅) by local bus or taxi. Buses are infrequent, so checking both the outbound and return times in advance is reassuring. The grounds have slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes for your visit.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 20 minutes. In the early afternoon, the crowd of worshippers settles down, and the light falls nicely on Lake Shinji as seen from the grounds.
