Cold spring water at about 11 degrees year-round, a named water from Japan's Top 100 Waters, flowing in the forest
About this spot
A spring water that flows at the foot of Naka-Hiruzen deep in the forest, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waters. Its daily discharge is said to reach approximately 3,000 tons, and the water temperature remains around 11 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Even in the height of summer, standing near the spring envelops you in refreshing cold air. The spring, which wells up in an eroded ravine, is remarkably clear; the water surface glimmers blue in certain light—breathtakingly beautiful. This is also one of the source streams of the Asahi River (旭川), one of Okayama Prefecture's three major rivers, with clean water flowing endlessly. Nearby are a small shop and campground, and taking a rest on a shaded bench while savoring the spring water offers the perfect respite during your highland drive.
Tips
The walk from the parking lot to the spring takes only a few minutes, but the path has tree roots and damp soil, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Many people visit to collect water, so please be considerate and share the space. Even in summer, the cool air can feel chilly, so bring a light layer.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The afternoon when sunlight filters through the leaves makes the blue of the spring especially striking.
