About this spot

This limestone cave, one of the largest in the Chugoku region, opens its mouth in a towering limestone cliff about 240 meters high rising along the Takahashi River (高梁川). Inside, over a course of roughly 1,200 meters, rows of stalactites and stalagmites shaped by long ages continue, along with highlights such as the Chijiku no Taki waterfall with a drop of about 50 meters and the curtain-like Gin Sudare formation. The cave's temperature stays around 15 degrees Celsius year-round, a separate world that is cool in summer and mildly warm in winter. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the exit after making your way through an up-and-down, adventure-like path is exceptional. You can also enjoy the scenic beauty of Ikura Gorge (井倉峡), which spreads out in front of the cave.

Tips

There is free parking and a shop in front of the entrance. The cave has many stairs and narrow passages, so wearing something like a backpack that keeps your hands free is reassuring. Water drips from the ceiling in some spots, so do not forget a light jacket and shoes with good grip.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. It is relatively uncrowded in the morning, letting you walk through the cave at your own pace.
