About this spot

This limestone cave is said to have taken its name from a poem by the tanka poet Yosano Akiko, who described it as a cave full of wonders. The roughly 450-meter interior is nearly flat and easy to walk, and the biggest highlight is the Yume no Kyuden at the far end. In a great hall lined with pillar-like stalactites, an underground lake spreads out, and the sight of a vermilion bridge spanning it looks just like a dragon palace. Stalactites lit by soft lighting are reflected on the water's surface, creating a breathtaking, fantastical world. Also known as a filming location for movies, this famous cave offers a quiet, painting-like beauty that is a different flavor from the adventurous appeal of Ikura-do (井倉洞), one you can savor at leisure.

Tips

It takes a few minutes to climb a slope from the parking lot to the entrance. The cave interior is flat and easy to walk, but there are spots with low ceilings, so watch your head. The temperature stays around 15 degrees Celsius year-round, so a light jacket comes in handy here too.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The cave, lit up with lighting, is fantastical all day long. Take your time here as the finale of your afternoon.
