The old town district of Katsuyama, which flourished as a post town on the Izumo Highway and as a castle town under the Miura clan. This street, lined with white-walled earthen storehouses and latticed-window merchant houses, was the first townscape preservation district designated in Okayama Prefecture. The town's signature feature is the grass-dyed linen curtains (のれん) swaying in front of the eaves. Spreading from local dye workshops, these curtains now hang throughout the town—at sake breweries, tea houses, and private homes—each reflecting its proprietor's livelihood and business, turning the entire street into a gallery of grass-dyed textiles. Sake breweries, cafés housed in renovated folk houses, and eateries are scattered throughout, perfect for lunch and post-meal strolling. The stone-paved pathway along the Asahi River, where traces of high-hulled boat landings remain, is also picturesque, with refreshing breezes crossing the water.
Tips
A public parking lot is available near the preservation district entrance. Popular eateries get crowded during lunch hours, so arriving early ensures a smooth experience. Each curtain has unique designs, so exploring the street while searching for your favorite piece doubles the enjoyment.
Best time to visit
About 2 hours 30 minutes (including lunch). Morning light beautifully showcases the colors of the curtains, making pre-lunch strolling particularly pleasant.
