"Hanzaki" (はんざき) is a local name for the giant Japanese salamander, derived from a legend that it can survive being split in half. At this center located at the entrance to the Yuhadha Hot Spring area, you can observe the giant Japanese salamander, a Special Natural Monument designated by the nation, up close in tanks. The mesmerizing moment when this seemingly motionless creature suddenly yawns is a must-see. The upper Asahi River area around Yuhadha has long been known as a native habitat, and the exhibits teach visitors about the creatures' ecology and conservation efforts. Nearby stands a small shrine dedicated to the hanzaki, the Hanzaki Daimyōjin (はんざき大明神), allowing you to sense the local culture of respecting and coexisting with one of the world's largest amphibians.

Tips

Admission is free and parking is available. The compact facility takes about 40 minutes to explore thoroughly. Avoid using flash when photographing the tanks to avoid startling the salamanders and to capture better images.
