The Panoramic Multi-Island Landscape of the Seto Inland Sea from the Olive Grove Hillside
About this spot
An agricultural park known as a pioneer in Japan's olive cultivation, with approximately 2,000 olive trees covering the hillside of Ushimado. Climbing the pathways through groves with silver-tinged leaves shimmering in the sea breeze, from the hilltop observation platform you can take in the multi-island landscape with islands such as Maejima and Shodoshima layering one after another. This is Ushimado's most spectacular scenic spot where you truly feel the epithet "Japan's Aegean Sea." On the hilltop stands the "Bell of Happiness," which is said to bring good fortune when rung—ringing it together is a date tradition. The shop carries olive oil and cosmetics, and it's also recommended to take a break at the hilltop café while gazing at the sea.
Tips
Entry and parking are free. The grounds feature continuous slopes, so comfortable sneakers are recommended. The observation platform area has little shade; on sunny days, a hat and sunscreen are advisable for comfort. Olive oil from the shop is a popular souvenir, so bringing an extra bag for purchases is convenient.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes. In the morning, the air is clear and the outlines of the islands are sharply visible.
