A Morning Stroll Through a Great Daimyo Garden in Clear Air—One of Japan's Three Great Gardens

Ranked among Japan's three great gardens alongside Mito's Kairakuen (水戸の偕楽園) and Kanazawa's Kenrokuen (金沢の兼六園), this magnificent daimyo garden was built by order of Okayama Domain lord Ikeda Tsunamasa (池田綱政). Spanning approximately 130,000 square meters, this stroll garden ingeniously combines lawns, meandering streams, ponds, and artificial hills, with ever-changing vistas as you walk through it. Climb the roughly 6-meter-high Yuishinzan (唯心山) built near the garden's center, and you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire garden across the pond and lawns. From here, the jet-black Okayama Castle tower on the opposite bank of the Asahi River stands as a borrowed landscape (shakkei), creating a composition worthy of a great garden. Despite being a daimyo garden, it also charms with an unexpectedly rural atmosphere, featuring red-crowned cranes, tea plantations, and rice paddies.

Tips

The early morning hours right after opening offer fewer crowds and are the most beautiful time when dew glimmers on the lawns. There is a paid parking lot near the main gate, but the streetcar from Okayama Station plus a short walk or a direct bus is also convenient. The garden has limited shade, so don't forget a hat and water. A combination ticket with Okayama Castle offers savings on admission.

Best time to visit

Approximately 90 minutes required. Early morning light avoids harsh backlighting, and the view of the entire garden and Okayama Castle from Yuishinzan is at its clearest.
