Commanding Views of Korakuen and the City from the Jet-Black Tower of the Crow Castle

About this spot

Built by Ukyoto Hideie (宇喜多秀家), a daimyo favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), this castle is affectionately known as Karasu-jo (Crow Castle) for its distinctive black wooden siding. The castle's layout cleverly incorporates the flow of the Asahi River as a natural moat. Just a short walk across the Tsukimi Bridge (月見橋) from Korakuen, the castle interior features exhibits on the history of successive lords and the development of the Okayama castle town. There's also an experience corner where you can be photographed in a traditional palanquin (kago) and a Bizen pottery workshop, offering fun for both adults and children. From the observation room on the top floor, you can see the Asahi River and the verdant Korakuen below, with the city's modern buildings beyond—a spectacular view where the great garden and castle town are visible all at once.

Tips

The route crossing the Tsukimi Bridge from Korakuen side offers excellent views and is recommended. The numerous stairs inside the tower mean comfortable shoes are essential. Lunch at tea houses inside the castle or nearby cafes offers a chance to try Okayama specialties like demi-glace katsudon (demi-katsudon) or scattered sushi (barazushi). The combination ticket with Korakuen is accepted.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours (including lunch). Late morning light brings out the black walls of the tower beautifully for photos across the Asahi River.
