This grand mansion was built by Nozaki Bustaro, the "Salt Baron" who amassed his wealth through development of the inshore salt fields (irihama-shikien), and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The approximately 3,000-tsubo grounds feature an imposing main gate, a main residence with rooms extending deep within, and groups of storehouses—a truly impressive scale. The preserved dry landscape garden and tea room evoke the underlying strength of Kojima's salt-making prosperity. An on-site Salt Industry History Museum displays the history of salt production, providing an encounter with another facet of Kojima—the town of cruises and jeans—making it a fitting culmination to the day.
Tips
Museum reception closes 30 minutes before closing time, so arrive with adequate time to spare. Kojima Jeans Street is just a short walk away, making it easy to stop by after shopping. Dedicated parking is also available.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Evening's soft light beautifully illuminates the white-walled mansion and gardens.
