Spectacular Views from the Vermillion Main Hall Jutting Over the Cliff - Onomichi's Greatest Vista
About this spot
An ancient temple known for its vermillion-lacquered main hall jutting out over a cliff, located on the slopes of Senkoji Mountain at an altitude of approximately 140 meters. From the stage of the main hall, you can see the townscape of Onomichi, the Onomichi Strait, the nearby island of Mukaishima, and the Shimanami islands stretching beyond—a view that epitomizes the slope town of Onomichi. The grounds are dotted with sights related to rocks, such as the massive "Tama-no-Iwa" (Ball Rock), said to once have had a glowing orb on its peak, and the mirror-like polished "Kagami-Iwa" (Mirror Rock). You can also attempt the chain climb (kushari shugyo, offered for a small donation) along the rocks. If you descend from the summit via the Literature Path, you'll arrive at the temple grounds along a scenic pilgrimage route lined with haiku and tanka monuments dedicated to Onomichi's literary figures.
Tips
The standard route is to walk down from the summit station via the Literature Path. Many stone steps and rocky areas are involved, so sneakers are recommended. The main hall stage is a popular photo spot, so be considerate when there are crowds. If you attempt the chain climb, organize your luggage so both hands are free.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes needed. Mid-morning with front lighting is best—the Onomichi Strait glows blue and the views from the main hall are most photogenic.
