Located next to Fukuyama Art Museum, this museum focuses on the history and culture of the Seto Inland Sea. The highlight is a full-scale recreation of the medieval settlement and port town based on excavations of the Kusado Sengen ruins, which lay buried in the Ashida River bottom. The mud-walled houses, goods displayed at shop fronts, and boat landing areas are all reproduced to actual scale. Walking through this dimly lit recreation, you'll feel as though you've stumbled into a medieval port town. The extensive display of excavated artifacts brings vividly to life the daily existence of common people, whose history is scarcely documented, allowing you to truly appreciate the fascination of archaeology. Once you learn that Myōōin (明王院), which you'll visit next, is a temple connected to Kusado Sengen, the connection enhances the narrative of your day's journey.
Tips
Just next to Fukuyama Art Museum, a minute's walk away. Be sure to check opening days in advance as there are specific closure days. The recreated townscape employs dimmed lighting as a theatrical effect, so walk slowly as your eyes adjust to discover details more fully.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early afternoon tends to be relatively quiet, and you may find yourself enjoying the recreated townscape in solitude.
