About this spot

A park developed on the former site of Hagi Castle, the residence of the Mori clan. Though the main tower is lost, the stone walls reflected in the moat and Mount Shizuki rising behind preserve the castle's former grandeur. Ascending the main tower base offers views across the castle town's rooftops to the Japan Sea. Tea houses and Shizukigisan Shrine dot the grounds. Nearby, white-sand Kiku Beach stretches out, allowing seaside strolls with the sound of waves after exploring the castle ruins. Hagi is known for retaining the original street layouts of its old castle town maps. This castle ruin, the origin point of those layouts, is a fitting place to conclude your historical walk.

Tips

Paid parking available near the entrance. The stone steps to the main tower base are steep; wear comfortable walking shoes. Admission tickets are combined with the former Asa Mori Family Hagi Residence long houses. Time permitting, extend your walk to Kiku Beach.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Late afternoon light bathes the moat and stone walls in soft tones, creating the most beautiful conditions for photography.
