Next stop: Japan's First National Treasure Lighthouse—360-Degree Panorama from 105 Spiral StepsAbout this spot
A museum introducing the natural history of Tsuno Island. The highlight is an exhibition about the "Tsunoshima Whale" (ツノシマクジラ), a newly recorded species based on an individual found off Tsuno Island; seeing the specimens and materials firsthand conveys the whale's scale and helps you appreciate the richness of the sea before you. Additional displays clearly explain the seabirds and marine life inhabiting the Tsuno Island area and the natural mechanisms behind the creation of the cobalt blue sea. A stop here during your drive will change how you see the landscape beyond the windows. Though compact, the museum's exhibits are rich and perfectly sized for the two of you to walk through while sharing impressions.
Tips
Access the museum after crossing Tsuno Island Great Bridge to reach the island. Admission is reasonably priced, making it ideal for a break during strong sunlight or on rainy days. Parking is free.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. Visiting before heading to the lighthouse deepens your understanding of the island's nature, making the second half of the journey even more enjoyable.
