Paint Goldfish Lanterns at a White-Walled Warehouse—Create a One-of-a-Kind Souvenir
About this spot
A hands-on workshop housed in a renovated white-walled warehouse (formerly a soy sauce storage building) at the western end of the white-walled district. Here, you can try your hand at painting goldfish lanterns, Yanai's signature folk craft. Using a brush, add eyes and scales to a plain white goldfish to create your own unique piece. The plump red fish takes on different expressions depending on the artist's touch, making it fun to show off your finished work. The facility also features weaving experiences for Yanai-gasuri (traditional striped textile) and gallery exhibitions; admission is free. Taking time to do hands-on creative work between meals will add depth and lasting memories to your Yanai visit.
Tips
Painting experiences can be enjoyed with same-day registration, but advance booking is recommended during weekends and peak tourist seasons. Since the activity uses paint, wear clothes you don't mind soiling or bring a smock. Carry your finished lantern gently in a bag to avoid damaging its shape.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. The mid-afternoon period right after lunch tends to be quieter, allowing you to concentrate fully on your painting.
