1,955 meters elevation—a heavenly grand panorama of bamboo grassland ridge and Jirougifu view
About this spot
At 1,955 meters elevation, the highest peak in Tokushima Prefecture and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The second highest peak in western Japan after Ishizuchisan, yet thanks to the lift, you can reach the summit in about 40 minutes from Nishijima Station—a mountain of remarkable depth. The summit area, called "Heike no Baba" (Heike Clan's Pasture), is a gentle plateau of bamboo grassland with a wooden deck boardwalk winding all around it. The ridge line stretching toward Jirougifu before you is said to be one of Shikoku's finest views. On clear days, you can see as far as the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean. Just below the summit, the Summit Hut provides a welcome convenience for beginners to take lunch or rest.
Tips
The ridge trail from Nishijima Station is the shortest and easiest route. The summit is exposed with strong winds, so be sure to bring a windbreaker. Enjoy the view from the wooden boardwalk to protect the grassland vegetation.
Best time to visit
About 3 hours total (round-trip walking and summit exploration). Clouds tend to gather from late morning onward, so early arrival at the summit is key to seeing the spectacular view.
