A shrine situated near the summit of Tsuminé Mountain, which rises in the south of Anan City, enshrining the deity Kashiwahime-Ōkami, the god of longevity and long life. From the base, ascend via the toll road Tsuminé Skyline to reach the mountaintop, then proceed from the parking lot to the shrine building by lift or stone-stepped approach path. The Tachibana Bay spread out below from the shrine grounds' observation area displays a striking multi-island seascape, celebrated as the Awa Islands of Matsushima. Offering a prayer for the day's safety while enveloped in views of sea and mountains in the crisp morning air creates a refreshing moment befitting the opening of a scenic drive.
Tips
Tsuminé Skyline is a toll road. A lift is convenient from the mountaintop parking lot to the shrine building, but if walking, the stone steps are steep, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. It's reassuring to prepare cash for lift tickets and purchases at the shrine office.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The bay side faces the morning light, making the outlines of the islands clearly visible
