Shikoku's Largest Zoo: Journey Through Four Climate Zones to Meet Savanna's Favorite Animals
About this spot
This is Shikoku's largest-class zoo and the core facility of Tokushima Municipal Zoo and Botanical Park, which spreads across the hills of Tokushima City. The zoo is divided into four climate zone sections—temperate, tropical, savanna, and arctic—where you can encounter a diverse array of animals such as giraffes, lions, red pandas, and polar bears as if traveling around the world. The Children's Zoo is popular for hands-on experiences with small animals like guinea pigs, and the warmth of life felt up close will surely remain in children's hearts. Guided tours by care staff and feeding times are scheduled on certain days, and exploring the park according to the day's schedule deepens the enjoyment even further.
Tips
The parking lot on the zoo side is convenient (paid). The garden has undulating terrain following the slope of the hill, so it's navigable with a stroller, but comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Contact stations for animal interaction have limited hours, so it's reassuring to check the day's guide upon entry. It's also a nice perk for families that admission is free for students through junior high school.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours 20 minutes required. Early morning right after opening is best for seeing animals moving actively.
