Morning Visit Praying for Safe Travels at the Shrine Right Next to the Ropeway Station

About this spot

A shrine located at the foot of Bizan, right next to Awa Odori Hall, dedicated to Sugawara Michizane (菅原道真公), known as the god of scholarship. Climbing the stone steps, you can glimpse Tokushima's streetscape from the shrine grounds, and praying in the crisp morning air is a perfect start to your day. Within the shrine grounds is also Hime Shrine (姫宮神社), which enshrines the god of love and marriage, and a notable sight is the collection of ema (votive plaques) for academic success and marriage blessings displayed in rows. With its location just a stone's throw from the Bizan Ropeway mountain base station, it is the ideal place to pray for safe travels before your aerial walk. As the gateway to Bizan tourism, it is also beloved by local residents.

Tips

You can use the parking lot at Awa Odori Hall or nearby coin parking. The path to the shrine grounds involves climbing several dozen stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The morning is less crowded, allowing for peaceful worship.
