A Grand Panorama at the Summit Overlooking Tokushima's Cityscape and the Kii Channel

About this spot

A park sprawling across the summit area of Bizan, at approximately 290 meters elevation, and a renowned destination for sweeping views. From the observation plaza, you can see the majestic flow of the Yoshii River running through the city, the rows of houses, and the waters of the Kii Channel, and on clear days, the mountain silhouettes of Awaji Island (淡路島) and the Wakayama area. Throughout the park, points of interest include a peace pagoda and poetry stone tablets from the Manyoshu (万葉集), and following the walking trails for a mountain-top stroll is another enjoyment. The sandbar visible below shaped like a hyotan (bottle gourd) is none other than the "Hyotan Island" (ひょうたん島) you'll circle around later on the tour boat. Mentally mapping the city from above will make the afternoon river tour many times more enjoyable.

Tips

The summit is cooler and windier than the downtown, so having a light jacket is reassuring. The observation plaza is a short walk from the summit station, but the park's walking trails have some elevation changes, so sneakers are comfortable.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The morning air is clear, making views to the Kii Channel and Awaji Island especially easy to spot.
