A 30-Minute Bridge-Ducking Boat Journey Circling the Hyotan-Shaped Sandbar
About this spot
An approximately 30-minute cruise aboard a small sightseeing boat that circles the sandbar in the heart of Tokushima City, surrounded by the Shinmachi River (新町川) and Tasuku River (助任川), named "Hyotan Island" (ひょうたん島) for its shape. Departing from the base of Ryogoku Bridge (両国橋), the boat travels at water level, offering the thrill of bowing your head each time you pass under low bridges—a perfect finale for vehicle enthusiasts. The view of Bizan and the riverside scenery as seen from the river are sights you'll never encounter from walking on land. Operated by local citizen volunteers, the boat offers affordable fares and lighthearted guide commentary that becomes a cherished memory of your trip. In the morning you looked down at this sandbar from the summit; now you enjoy the luxury of traversing it from the water.
Tips
The boarding point is by the boardwalk at the north end of Ryogoku Bridge. Check the departure time first, then enjoy a leisurely wait in the park. Life jackets are available for borrowing. The river surface reflects brightly, so a hat is helpful for comfort.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour (approximately 30 minutes sailing time). Evening transforms the river surface to golden tones, making a fitting finale to your day.
