An open-air museum sprawling across the foothills of Yashima, where thatched-roof farmhouses relocated from throughout Shikoku, sugar-pressing huts, lighthouse keeper's quarters, and other precious buildings are scattered among the greenery. Crossing a reconstructed vine bridge from the Iya Gorge and following winding paths, you'll visit each structure one by one—farmhouses with traditional agricultural kabuki stages and soy sauce breweries—and begin to see in three dimensions the history of Shikoku's rural life and industries. The grounds feature undulating mountain paths, and simply wandering around feels like a light hiking experience. Walking among the old farmhouses in the crisp morning air, hearing bird calls, is the perfect opening act for a Yashima historical walk.
Tips
The entrance is at the western base of Yashima, with free parking available. The grounds feature many stone steps and slopes, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. A thorough visit takes nearly two hours, so be mindful of your time budget for afternoon sightseeing on the mountaintop. For those hesitant about the vine bridge, a detour route is available.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Visiting shortly after opening in the morning means fewer crowds, allowing you to quietly wander among the farmhouses dappled with morning light.
