Lunch at a celebrated Sanuki udon restaurant known for hearty noodles boiled in a wood-fired cauldron
About this spot
A celebrated noodle restaurant housed in a traditional standalone building in the foothills of Mannō Town, loved by udon pilgrims from across the country. The shop maintains the time-honored method of stoking fires and bringing the cauldron water to boil with firewood, resulting in sturdy, substantial noodles. The signature way to eat here is "hiyaatsu"—chilled noodles topped with hot dipping broth—where the wheat flavor blooms with each bite. Self-service ordering at the counter, which you then carry to your table, is a distinctly Sanuki experience. The generously-sized squid leg tempura (geso tempura), served fresh and piping hot, is a signature dish rivaling the noodles themselves.
Tips
Expect a queue during lunch hours, so arriving before noon is recommended. Since the service is self-order, it helps to decide the order flow with your family in advance (choose hot or cold noodles → pick tempura → pay). Cash payment is preferred. There is a parking lot in front of the restaurant.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Arriving before noon means shorter lines and a higher chance of getting freshly fried geso tempura.
