A massive sand coin art "Kanei Tsuho" (寛永通宝) measuring 122m east-west by 90m north-south with a circumference of 345m, drawn on the white sand of Ariake Beach. Renowned as a symbol of Kanonji City, when viewed from the observation deck at the summit of Kotohiki Mountain, the elliptical sand art is positioned so that it appears as a perfect circle. According to legend, it was created in a single night to welcome the domain lord's inspection, and there is a cherished belief that anyone who sees this coin art will enjoy good health and longevity, and will never lack for money. You can reach the observation deck by car or by walking up through a forest trail along the pine grove. The white sand and blue pine-covered Ariake Beach stretching below, with the sand coin floating in the middle overlooking the Hiuchinade Strait, has far more impact than photos can convey.
Tips
The full form of the sand art cannot be seen if you go down to the beach, so be sure to view it from the observation deck at the summit of Kotohiki Mountain. The road to the summit has sections with narrow width, so drive carefully. If walking up, sneakers are recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Late morning to early afternoon, when the sun is high, the contrast between white sand and green pines is sharp and clear.
