Scenic stroll along a white beach with Man'yōshū heritage, gazing at the Seto Bridge in stunning proximity
About this spot
Shami Island, once a true island floating in the Seto Inland Sea, became connected to the mainland through landfill and is now a site steeped in Man'yōshū poetry heritage. The poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro is said to have visited and composed a verse here, and a poetry monument stands nearby the beach. From the white sandy shore, you can view the Seto Bridge crossing the sea in surprisingly close proximity, experiencing a unique and surreal moment where the sound of lapping waves mingles with the rumble of passing trains. While summer brings swimming crowds, other seasons are also enjoyable for beach walks and shell collecting, allowing you to leisurely savor a landscape where ancient Man'yōshū poetry and modern civil engineering coexist.
Tips
The beach is just a short walk from the free parking lot. Since you'll be walking on sand, wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty and bring a towel. Shops in the area are limited, so bring your own beverages. The parking area gets crowded during the summer beach season.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. In the afternoon, the Seto Bridge seen from the beach is backlit, making the white bridge girders stand out clearly.
