A Rare Original Tower from the Edo Period—Panoramic Views of the Seto Inland Sea from the Top Floor

Matsuyama Castle stands on the summit of Katsuyama Mountain at an elevation of 132 meters and is one of Japan's twelve rare remaining original towers, with a castle keep dating from before the Edo period. Its linked-tower style, where the main keep and smaller keep are connected by covered corridors along with other towers, is found in only a few examples in Japan. The approach to the castle winds through multiple layers of gates, towers, and stone walls like a maze, with arrow slits and stone-dropping chutes that show its defensive design. Ascending to the top floor of the keep, you are rewarded with a vast panorama of the Matsuyama Plain and the Seto Inland Sea, and on clear days, even the Ishizuchi Mountain range. A cable car and lift run side by side up the mountain, and the approximately 3-minute aerial walk is itself one of the pleasures of the journey.
Tips
The cable car and lift boarding area is at the Shinonome Station building. Early morning visits mean shorter queues on the castle stairs, making for a more comfortable experience. Inside the castle, you must remove your shoes and climb steep stairs, so easy-to-remove shoes and non-slip socks are recommended. Combination tickets for round-trip cable car and castle admission offer good savings.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Early morning light provides good exposure, the white walls of the castle look beautiful, and you can view at leisure before crowds arrive.
