A Quiet Castle-Town Garden Where the Former Residence Grounds Are Expressed in Water and Citrus Trees

A garden developed at the site of the former Ninomaru residence, the domain lord's mansion at the base of Matsuyama Castle. The layout of the former residence is expressed on the ground through water channels, gravel, and citrus trees in the "Front Residence Ruins"—featuring a citrus tree and flower garden—and in the "Rear Residence Ruins" with its landscaped pond and waterfall. The design allows visitors to trace the outline of residence life simply by walking through it. The Great Well ruins in the garden, discovered during castle ascent, are the remains of a large-scale well whose impressive scale is a must-see. Also selected as a "Sacred Place for Lovers," the location where you can look up at the castle tower on the mountain beyond the white plaster walls promises a calm and leisurely castle-town stroll.
Tips
From Matsuyama Castle's main citadel, you can descend directly via the Kuromon-guchi approach and reach the garden on foot (about 15 minutes down). The garden features mostly gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. A ticket window is located near the garden entrance, and combination tickets with the castle are available.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Late morning has fewer tour groups, allowing you to walk quietly while listening to the sound of water.
