Emerald-Green Pools in Succession - One of Shikoku's Finest Gorges

About this spot

A great national designated scenic gorge sprawling across the southern foothills of Mount Ishizuchi (西日本最高峰), the highest peak in western Japan. Located at the source of the Yodo River, known for its "Yodo Blue," the water flowing through white granite riverbeds is so transparent it feels like it could draw you in—a mesmerizing emerald green. Walking the nature trail from the gate at the entrance through Goshiki-kawara, the massive rock formation Kamebare, towering approximately 100 meters high, looms overhead, with a succession of pools and rapids creating breathtaking gorge scenery. In summer, it's called nature's air conditioner for its coolness, and sitting on the riverbed to spread your bento while listening only to the sound of water and bird calls offers a moment of true luxury. Experience this clear stream scenery—acclaimed as one of Shikoku's finest—with all your senses.

Tips

Free parking is available near the entrance gate. While the nature trail is well-maintained, there are rocky areas and protruding tree roots, so non-slip sneakers are essential. In summer, many people enjoy water play along the riverbank, so it's helpful to bring a towel and extra socks. Mountain weather changes quickly, so don't forget a lightweight rain jacket.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 2 hours. From late morning through early afternoon, sunlight reaches the gorge floor, and the emerald green of the pools shines most brilliantly.
