Western Gateway Where Climbing Winding Roads Reveals a Verdant Landscape
About this spot
The western gateway to Shikoku Karst, nestled in the mountains of Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture. Grasslands stretch endlessly across a highland at approximately 1,100–1,400m elevation, known as a dairy farming region. Cut from the land through post-war land reclamation efforts, it still retains the charm of cattle grazing peacefully as part of daily life. Beech primeval forests and wetlands remain in surrounding areas, offering encounters with abundant nature that seems unlikely for a karst plateau. The moment you crest the winding mountain road from the foothills, the verdant landscape that fills your view marks the exhilarating start of your sky grassland drive.
Tips
The mountain road from the foothills has sections with narrow lanes, so watch for oncoming traffic and drive slowly. Since there are limited shops and restrooms on the highland, it's safe to stock up on drinks at a convenience store in the foothills. Even in summer, the highland is cool in the morning, so bring a light jacket.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. The morning air is clear, and you may encounter a fantastical landscape with morning mist lingering on the pastures.
