Face-to-Face with Japan's Only紫電改 (Shiden-kai) Aircraft Raised from the Seabed

About this spot

A museum in a corner of Maseyama Summit Park overlooking the Uwakai Sea, preserving and displaying an actual紫電改 (Shiden-kai) fighter aircraft of the former Imperial Japanese Navy raised from the seabed of Kura Bay. The aircraft is said to be the only existing fuselage in Japan, and after spending long years beneath the sea, it rests quietly with its wings folded, retaining the appearance from the time of its recovery. The museum also displays materials related to the aircrews, and their stories—young men who fell in the sky—are profoundly moving. Despite free admission, the exhibition is impressive. This place, which conveys the value of peace to future generations, is particularly memorable in your journey.

Tips

Admission is free, and it's just a short walk from the free parking lot at Maseyama Summit Park. From the hilltop, you can also see the scenic beauty of Gosho Bay and the Uwakai Sea with its islands. Since the exhibition deals with war-related topics, please view respectfully and quietly.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. The morning is relatively uncrowded, allowing you to engage with the exhibits at your leisure.
