The Essence of Imabari Soul Food: Original Sweet and Spicy Sauce with Soft-Boiled Egg

About this spot

A Chinese restaurant known nationwide as the originator of yakibuta tamago gohan, Imabari's soul food. The yakibuta tamago gohan consists of hot white rice topped with thinly sliced grilled pork, a soft-boiled egg, and drizzled with a sweet and spicy secret sauce. Originally created as a staff meal in the kitchen, it became so popular it's now a signature dish with lines always out the door. As the golden yolk flows and mingles with the sauce, the fragrant and sweet-spicy flavor of the grilled pork spreads throughout your mouth. The shop also offers other town Chinese classics like shrimp in chili sauce and sweet and sour pork, and sharing with companions is also recommended.

Tips

Expect lines during lunch hours. Arriving right when the restaurant opens ensures the shortest wait. Reserved parking is limited, so nearby parking lots are an option. Yakibuta tamago gohan is served quickly with fast turnover, so the wait time is often surprisingly short despite the lines.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Entering right after opening means shorter lines and you can enjoy freshly fried and cooked items.
