World's First Three-Span Suspension Bridge and Japan's Three Greatest Tidal Currents at a Free Observation Hall
About this spot
A free observation facility located at Itoyama Park, near the base of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. The Kurushima Kaikyo strait below is one of Japan's three greatest tidal currents, alongside the Naruto and Kanmon straits. During fast-moving tide times, you can observe whirlpools forming on the sea surface. Before you stretches the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the world's first three-span suspension bridge, spanning across the islands, and the panorama created by passing ships and the bridge is spectacular. Inside the hall, exhibits teach about the bridge construction techniques and the natural features of the strait, while the outdoor observation plaza offers views that are the highlight of this journey.
Tips
You can use the free parking lot at Itoyama Park. The area around the observation deck has strong sea breezes, so a light cardigan is a good idea. If time allows, the angle from the adjacent cycling terminal viewing the bridge from below is also recommended.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. If you happen to visit during strong tidal flow times, you can witness whirlpools and the bridge in a spectacular show.
