About this spot
A traditional strolling garden with a central pond, originally built as a retirement residence for the Uwajima Date clan. The garden's name derives from a line in a poem by the great daimyo Date Masamune: "where heaven grants mercy." Throughout the grounds grow bamboo and related plants closely associated with the Date family crest—a sparrow among bamboo—and the distinctive feature is the graceful arch of white wisteria trellises spanning the pond like a drum bridge. Dotting the garden are quaint teahouses such as Senenbukan and Shunuisai. A leisurely walk along the pebbly garden paths offers just the right amount of gentle exercise to ease digestion after your tai meshi, and the serene atmosphere—surprising for a location in town—is another irresistible charm.
Tips
The paths feature polished pebbles and stepping stones, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The garden has scheduled closure days, so check opening information before your visit for peace of mind. Free parking is available. Shade is limited in some areas, so bring a hat on sunny days.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. In early afternoon, light falls across the pond, brightening the entire garden and creating excellent photo opportunities.
