This shrine is dedicated to Yamabe Seibei Kouyori, a chief retainer of Uwajima Domain, and has long been venerated as a guardian deity of fishing and industry throughout Shikoku and into Kyushu. The imposing stone torii gate standing majestically beside the Sugakawa River is said to be among Japan's largest, and its reflection in the water is equally magnificent. The spacious grounds feel wonderfully removed from the town's bustle, and walking the approach to the worship hall gently settles any excitement from your food-filled day. Waryō Shrine is also known as the site of Uwajima's grandest festival, Waryō Festival, and stands as a spiritual anchor deeply woven into the fabric of local life. As evening light bathes the great torii gate, it offers a suitably solemn conclusion to your day.
Tips
From Kisaiya Square, the shrine is about 5 minutes by car, with visitor parking near the grounds. The approach and grounds are graveled paths, so your walking shoes will serve you well. After your visit, Uwajima Station is nearby for convenient onward travel.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. Evening is ideal—the western sun illuminates the great torii gate beautifully, and the reflection on the river water is stunning.
