Reverent Bowing to the Sacred Peak of Ishizuchi Mountain from the Middle Shrine at 1,450 Meters Elevation

About this spot

The mountain shrine representing the middle shrine of Ishizuchi Shrine, enshrined at approximately 1,450 meters elevation. From Joujueki summit station, walk approximately 20 minutes along a mountain path enveloped in natural beech and fir forests. After passing through the collection of inns and shops at the Jouju settlement, a solemn shrine building and gate appear. According to tradition, the name comes from En-no-Gyoja, the legendary founder of mountain ascetic practice, who upon completing his training turned back, bowed to the mountain, and declared "my wish is fulfilled." Pilgrims have long come here to purify themselves before heading to the summit. From the Tengu Gyohaianden (Return Bowing Hall), you can gaze directly upon the summit of Ishizuchi Mountain through the shrine gate—a truly heavenly place of worship. The forest along the mountain path echoes with the songs of nightingales and cuckoos, adding to the mountain-walking experience.

Tips

The mountain path has tree roots and stone steps, so sneakers are essential. The elevation brings cool air even in midsummer, so bring a light layer. There are limited shops along the path, so bring your own beverages. Sacred stamps are available at the shrine office. Morning hours typically have fewer clouds at the summit, making it easier to see Ishizuchi Mountain.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required (including round-trip on the mountain path). Morning hours are best when the summit is less cloudy and Ishizuchi Mountain is easier to view.
