Located directly in front of Oote Gate of Kochi Castle, this museum houses approximately 67,000 items from the Yamauchi family, lords of Tosa Domain. From the armor and swords of successive lords and lacquerware adorned with makie to materials related to Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration figures including Sakamoto Ryoma, visitors can systematically learn Tosa's history. Viewing the origins of Kochi Castle you climbed in the morning and maps of the castle town allows you to experience the sensation of the paths you've walked overlapping on a historical map. The third-floor observation lobby is a hidden scenic viewpoint where you can see both the tower and gate simultaneously—the perfect spot to catch your breath while gazing at the castle through the glass.
Tips
Exhibition changes may affect admission fees, so confirm the day's contents at the reception desk. The building's air conditioning makes it ideal for cooling down from summer heat and fatigue. The museum shop's Tosa-style patterned stationery is popular as a souvenir.
