Built by Yamanouchi Kazutoy, the first lord of Tosa Domain, this is one of only twelve existing castle towers in Japan. Moreover, it is the only castle in the entire nation where both the tower and main palace buildings remain intact—a dream come true for castle enthusiasts. The composition where Oote Gate and the tower fit into a single photograph is a signature angle unique to Kochi Castle, and you'll want to have your camera ready before passing through the gate. Climb the stone steps and view the Kaisentoku Hall with its shoin-style architecture before ascending to the top floor of the tower, where the streetscape of Kochi and the mountains in all directions spread into view. Around Oote Gate stand statues of Itagaki Taisuke and Chi̅yo, wife of Kazutoy̅o, known for her role as a virtuous spouse, offering a taste of stories from the Bakumatsu period to the castle town, all at this ideal starting point in the morning.

Tips

Right after opening in the early morning, before tour buses arrive, the tower interior is uncrowded, allowing for leisurely sightseeing. The tower features steep stairs throughout, so a backpack that keeps both hands free is recommended. The dedicated parking lot has limited spaces, so using public transportation—a five-minute walk from the 'Kochi Castle-mae' streetcar stop—is convenient.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning avoids backlighting, and the tower through Oote Gate appears crisp against the blue sky.
