Retrace the Footsteps of Young Ryoma in Kamimachi, Where He Was Born and Raised
About this spot
Located in the Kamimachi district where Sakamoto Ryoma was born and raised, this museum focuses on his formative years before his defection. Through dioramas recreating the townscape around Ryoma's birthplace and video exhibits, you can trace the story of how a crybaby became hardened by his sister Otome and distinguished himself in swordsmanship and learning. The museum also features exhibits where you can experience daily life in the Kamimachi of that era, conveying the atmosphere of a castle town where merchants and lower-ranking samurai moved about. The surrounding area is dotted within walking distance with the monument to Ryoma's birthplace and the remains of Saiya warehouse, so previewing at the museum before venturing out makes a Kamimachi walk infinitely more enjoyable.
Tips
From Hirome Market, take the streetcar to 'Kamimachi-1-chome' stop and it's nearby. Walking takes about 20 minutes, and the route along the main street is ideal for strolling. Pick up a map of related sites at the museum reception before starting your walk—recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. In the afternoon, the museum is calm, and you can enjoy the dioramas and video exhibits at leisure.
