A Final Prayer at a Shrine Associated with Former Domain Lords on the Banks of Kagami River

Perched on the banks of the Kagami River, this shrine enshrines Yamanouchi Kazutoy and his wife Chiyo, along with successive lords of Tosa Domain. The grounds occupy a corner of the former Yamauchi family's lower residence, and as you proceed down a verdant path, the hustle and bustle of the castle town gradually fades away. A highlight is the statue of Yamanouchi Yodō, a Bakumatsu-era domain lord, holding a cup while gazing toward the southern sky. Known as a heavy drinker who called himself 'the Drunken Whale Marquis,' the statue embodies Yodō's blend of humor and dignity. You visited the Yamauchi family's castle seat at Kochi Castle in the morning, viewed the family treasures at the museum, and now conclude by worshipping at the shrine dedicated to those very lords—a fitting finale where your day's journey becomes one continuous narrative.
Tips
From Ryoma's Birthplace Memorial Museum, it's about a 15-minute walk toward the Kagami River direction. The grounds have gravel paths, so comfortable walking shoes are fine. After your visit, strolling the riverside promenade ahead makes for a pleasant evening breeze that eases the day's fatigue.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Evening light bathes the path trees in gold, and fewer visitors allow for quiet prayer.
