Morning Worship at Tosa Ichinomiya with Cedar-Lined Approach

This ancient shrine, revered since early times as the foremost Shinto shrine of Tosa Province and affectionately called 'Shinane-sama' by locals, is a treasure of spiritual heritage. The main hall, transept, and worship hall, reportedly rebuilt by the warring states commander Chosokabe Motochika, display a rare 'iritombo' (arrow-shaped) design visible from above—a distinctive architectural style designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Surrounded by cedar groves and featuring a long approach avenue, an imposing two-story gate, and a solitary stone monument nestled in the depths of the sanctuary, there is much to discover. Morning worship in the crisp air offers a solemnity befitting the start of your day. Offer prayers for a safe journey before heading to Mount Godai.
Tips
Free parking available in the sanctuary grounds. The approach is a gravel path, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Passing through the two-story gate and following the avenue to the main hall is the proper pilgrimage route. Commemorative stamps can be obtained at the shrine office.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. Early morning sees few visitors, and the morning sunlight filtering through the cedar avenue is particularly refreshing.
