A Renowned Temple with a Five-Story Pagoda and Moss-Covered Stone Steps—31st Pilgrimage Site

The 31st sacred site of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage circuit. This renowned temple, said to have been chosen by the Buddhist priest Gyoki as sacred ground dedicated to Manjushri Bodhisattva in reverence of Mount Wutai in China, is also known as 'the Koya of Tosa.' The stone steps of the approach avenue, enveloped in cedar groves and moss, the five-story pagoda unique to Kochi Prefecture, and the imposing thatched-roof main hall (Monjudo) all deepen in their beauty with each step through the grounds. The treasure hall houses Buddhist statues designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and the famous garden attributed to Zen master Musō Kokushi is open for viewing. Known also as the temple associated with the young priest Junshin, celebrated in the Yosakoi folk song, the grounds resonate with devout recitations from pilgrims, enveloping the temple in an air of solemn prayer.
Tips
Free parking available at the base of the mountain gate. The famous garden and treasure hall are attended at the pilgrimage office. The stone steps and moss-covered avenue can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing. The Makino Botanical Garden is just a short walk from the temple grounds.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Morning hours offer quietness before group pilgrim visits arrive, and the dappled light through the moss-covered avenue is particularly beautiful.
